Fish Welfare Africa is led by a small team with deep, hands-on experience in veterinary medicine, aquaculture, and animal welfare — brought together by a shared conviction that fish deserve better.
Dr. Jane Mugure
Founder & Director
Jane holds a bachelor's degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Nairobi and an MSc in Animal Welfare Science, Ethics, and Law from the University of Glasgow. She is passionate about animal welfare, research, and global development, and volunteers regularly in the animal advocacy space. Jane has previously coordinated animal welfare projects in Kenya and founded Fish Welfare Africa to bring the same rigour and compassion to a species that has long been overlooked.
Dr. Diana Bett
Senior Programs Officer
Diana holds a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Nairobi and an MSc in Veterinary Aquaculture from the University of Stirling. She has over six years of experience promoting animal welfare in clinics, teaching institutions, and farm settings, working closely with pet owners, farmers, veterinary professionals, and students to promote good animal welfare practices.
Josphat Ekuam
Senior Research Officer
Josphat holds a Bachelor of Science in Animal Health Management from Egerton University and is currently pursuing an MSc in Animal Science at Maseno University. He is a veterinary professional and animal welfare specialist with extensive experience in livestock production, animal health, One Health, and sustainable food systems. His work focuses on integrating scientific evidence into policy, advocacy, and practical interventions that improve the welfare of farmed and wild-caught fish.
